What to Expect During Your Dental Cleaning Appointment

Regular dental cleanings are a vital part of maintaining a healthy smile. At your visit with our skilled dental hygienist, you’ll receive more than just a polished smile — you’ll also gain personalized education and guidance to keep your oral health on track between visits.

Teeth Cleaning

The Cleaning Process: Step by Step

1

Exam

Your hygienist will begin by reviewing your dental history and examining your mouth. This includes checking your gums for signs of inflammation, recession, or early signs of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis).

2

Plaque and Tartar Removal

Using specialized instruments, your hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) that build up on the teeth, especially in hard-to-reach areas. This step helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

3

Polishing

After the buildup is removed, your teeth will be polished with a high-powered brush and toothpaste. This helps remove surface stains and gives your teeth a smooth, clean feel.

4

Flossing

Your hygienist will floss between your teeth to ensure that no debris remains and to identify any areas where you may need to improve your flossing technique at home.

5

Fluoride Treatment (Optional)

A fluoride treatment may be offered to help strengthen your tooth enamel and protect against cavities, especially for children or patients with higher risk for decay.

Oral Health Education

Education is a key part of every cleaning appointment. Your hygienist will take the time to:

  • Show you proper brushing and flossing techniques
  • Recommend dental products suited to your needs (such as electric toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, or interdental brushes)
  • Discuss your diet and how it impacts your oral health
  • Answer any questions you may have about preventing tooth decay or gum disease

Whether you’re doing great or need a little extra guidance, our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and tools to maintain a healthy mouth.

Personalized Home Care Guidance

Every smile is different, and so is every home care routine. Based on your exam and cleaning, your hygienist may recommend:

  • Brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush for at least two minutes
  • Daily flossing or using alternatives like water flossers or soft picks
  • Rinsing with an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash
  • Avoiding sugary snacks and acidic drinks that can erode enamel
  • Scheduling regular check-ups every 6 months — or more frequently if needed
